For more Information...
Shellac: shellac is an organic resin produced by a small insect, called Tachardia lacca, belonging to the Scale insects family. This insect lives on a variety of aboriginal plants in the Indian subcontinent and its bordering areas.
To protect itself, this insect secretes a resin substance that creates a kind of protective coating around its body, with a dark purple-red colour, called lac. Shellac is then extracted from this rough coating. At first shellac wasn't collected for being used as a resin, but fot its characteristic pigment. It's been used in the Western word since the 17th century, but it became widespread in the 19th century. It has several benefits: it has a low toxicity, and it is easy to apply and repair.
Thanks to its hardness and long life-span it is perfect as coating, and that's why it is mostly used to finish vintage furniture. After being treated with shellac the surface results bright, and dry and silky to the touch.
